CONGRATULATING SHAWN GRAVES OF WOFFORD COLLEGE UPON BEING NAMED SOUTH CAROLINA AMATEUR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR.
Whereas, Shawn Graves of Wofford College has been named the South Carolina Amateur Athlete of the Year; and
Whereas, Shawn owns four National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) records: yards rushing in a season by a quarterback (1,483); touchdowns by a freshman (24); touchdowns in a season by a quarterback (24); and rushing average per game by a quarterback (147.1); and
Whereas, he is a prime contender for the Harlon Hill Trophy, the Division II equivalent of the Heisman; and
Whereas, he led Wofford to a 9-3 record in 1990 and the school's first-ever NCAA playoff appearance; and
Whereas, he owns sixteen school records as a football player for the Terriers; and
Whereas, he was the South Carolina High School Player of the Year for all classifications in 1988; and
Whereas, as a member of the Wofford Players Speakers Bureau, he routinely visits local schools to lecture on the value of education and staying away from drugs; and
Whereas, he is clearly a gifted athlete whose accomplishments and superb talent have contributed greatly to Wofford's football success; and
Whereas, he is also an outstanding young man with a well-developed sense of responsibility for his fellow human beings; and
Whereas, his success and his honors are highly deserving of recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates Shawn Graves of Wofford College upon being named South Carolina Amateur Athlete of the Year.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Graves and to Mr. Mark Cohen, Sports Information Director, Wofford College, Spartanburg, South Carolina 29303-3840.
