EXPRESSING THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AT THE DEATH OF THE HONORABLE JOHN T. CAMPBELL OF COLUMBIA, FORMER SECRETARY OF STATE, AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
Whereas, John T. Campbell, who served as South Carolina's Secretary of State for twelve years, died in August, 1991, at the age of seventy-eight; and
Whereas, he was born in Calhoun Falls, attended the public schools in Columbia and the University of South Carolina, attended the United States Army Air Force Instrument School, and served for four years as a pilot in the United States Army Air Force; and
Whereas, he owned Campbell's Drug Stores in Columbia, served two terms on the Columbia City Council, and was Mayor of Columbia from 1970-78; and
Whereas, he was elected to the office of Secretary of State in 1978 and reelected in 1982 and 1986 and served with great distinction; and
Whereas, he was well known and greatly liked for his outstanding sense of humor and his quick wit; and
Whereas, he was never too busy as a businessman in Columbia or as a municipal or statewide officeholder to take the time to listen to anyone who had a problem or who just wanted to talk; and
Whereas, he was a dedicated public servant and a truly kind, generous, and friendly individual who was very popular and who will be greatly missed. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, expresses sorrow at the death of the Honorable John T. Campbell of Columbia, former Secretary of State, and extends sympathy to his family and friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Campbell's widow, Gertrude Davis Campbell of Columbia.
