TO HONOR AND THANK THE LAW FIRM OF NELSON MULLINS RILEY & SCARBOROUGH FOR ITS UNSELFISH SERVICES AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF PRO BONO SERVICES TO THOSE IN NEED IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE THIS FIRM FOR RECEIVING THE 1992 AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION PRO BONO PUBLICO AWARD.
Whereas, during these economic times when businesses and industries are cutting staffs, reducing costs, and curtailing donations and contributions; and
Whereas, those who have the least in today's society often feel the hard times more than others, and those who have the capability to help should have an obligation to do so; and
Whereas, the lawyers of this State, through the South Carolina Bar, recognized this need and established in 1987 a Pro Bono Program to provide free legal services to these individuals; and
Whereas, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, the state's largest law firm with offices in Columbia, Greenville, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Atlanta, Georgia, recognized three years ago the need and responsibility to help those who are less fortunate; and
Whereas, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough began in 1988 building a structured, in-house pro bono program of legal services to the poor that gained both the endorsement and participation of all attorneys from the most senior partner to the newest associate; and
Whereas, this all-volunteer program of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough recognizes individual initiative in locating and implementing pro bono work; and
Whereas, the American Bar Association has awarded to Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough the 1992 American Bar Association Pro Bono Publico Award in recognition of the firm's outstanding contributions, accomplishments, and commitment to pro bono legal work. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honors and thanks the law firm of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough for its unselfish contributions of pro bono legal services to those South Carolinians who need help the most.
Be it further resolved that the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina recognizes and congratulates Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough for receiving the 1992 American Bar Association Pro Bono Publico Award.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the law firm of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough.
