TO CONGRATULATE NELSON RIVERS, III ON HIS APPOINTMENT AS DIRECTOR OF THE NAACP'S LARGEST REGIONAL OFFICE IN ATLANTA AND TO WISH HIM THE BEST OF LUCK IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, Nelson Rivers, III has been head of the South Carolina Conference of NAACP for the past ten years; and
Whereas, Nelson Rivers, III joined the NAACP as a volunteer in North Charleston after which he was appointed Executive Director in 1984;
Whereas, in his time as Executive Director, membership in the South Carolina NAACP has grown threefold to 30,000 and annual fund raising efforts have been in excess of $100,000; and
Whereas, Nelson Rivers has served passionately in his pursuit of social and economic justice for the African-American Community; and
Whereas, through this dynamic leadership, he has successfully worked toward broadening the employment and economic opportunities for minorities; and
Whereas, it was through this strong and savvy approach that NationsBank, Southern National, Flagstar (paren company of Denny's restaurants), Winthrop University, Hamricks department stores and several state agencies have offered the minority community financial and employment opportunities; and
Whereas, the state of South Carolina appreciates the dedicated and tireless service Nelson Rivers given to the people of our state, and
Whereas, the National NAACP has acknowledged and rewarded this service and his innovative and progressive leadership by appointing him as Director of the largest regional office of NAACP. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the General Assembly congratulates Nelson Rivers, III on his dedicated service to the people of South Carolina and wish him continued success and best wishes in his new post.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Nelson Rivers, III.
