RECOGNIZING AND THANKING VIOLA THOMPSON GRIFFIN OF ANDERSON COUNTY FOR HER CONTRIBUTIONS TO PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL AND TO WOMEN'S SPORTS.
Whereas, Viola Thompson Griffin tried out for the All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League in 1944 to play the game she loved on the highest possible level; and
Whereas, at the time, she was unaware of the uniqueness of that event or the contribution she was making to baseball or to women's sports; and
Whereas, she was one of two young women from South Carolina selected to play in the league; after her playing days were over in 1951, she returned to the Palmetto State to make her home and start her family and is the only former AAGPBL player living in South Carolina today; and
Whereas, the contributions of Viola Thompson Griffin and of the many other women involved with her in the AAGPBL have been immortalized in the excellent motion picture "A League of Their Own"; and
Whereas, Ms. Griffin was selected to work with the actresses in this movie and to help keep the filming authentic; she also played a small part in the closing scenes of the film and played in the old-timers game that was shown during the movie's closing credits; and
Whereas, Viola Thompson Griffin is an outstanding, modest, and much-admired lady who is greatly deserving of recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognizes and thanks Viola Thompson Griffin of Anderson County for her contributions to professional baseball and to women's sports.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ms. Griffin at Belton, South Carolina.
