Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the death on Wednesday, March 3, 1993, of Dr. Albert Sabin, world-renowned developer of the oral polio vaccine and Medical University of South Carolina faculty member; and
Whereas, Dr. Sabin has been a distinguished research professor emeritus of biomedicine at the Medical University of South Carolina since 1982 and first became associated with the Medical University in 1974. As a member of the Medical University faculty, he devoted himself to analysis and synthesis of available information as a basis for policy decisions in selected fields of biomedical research. His work on public policy issues covered a broad front of biomedical research and general public health issues; and
Whereas, Dr. Sabin has been a dominant figure in virology since he began his career in biomedical research in 1926 and is most widely acclaimed for his development of the orally administered poliovirus vaccine that has been used extensively since 1960; and
Whereas, for his generous assistance to peoples throughout the world in their fight to control disease, he has won the highest honors from countries worldwide and also has been honored by more than thirty-six universities which have conferred honorary degrees upon him; and
Whereas, the loss of this truly outstanding and distinguished medical researcher and pioneer will leave a void not only at the Medical University of South Carolina but in the field of biomedicine throughout the United States and the world which can never be adequately filled; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to extend their sincere condolences to his wife, daughters, family, and many friends upon his death at the age of eighty-six. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
