Whereas, each year the YWCA recognizes women in the community who not only make a significant contribution to the workplace, but who have volunteered their time to make South Carolina a better place to live; and
Whereas, the Tribute to Women and Industry program (TWIN) emphasizes not only the achievements of individual women but recognizes the accomplishments of local businesses which create a climate for women to succeed; and
Whereas, the TWIN honorees serve as role models for other achieving women in the work force and for young women preparing themselves for careers; and
Whereas, the nominees are reviewed for both professional achievement and community involvement; and
Whereas, Joan C. Scott of Columbia is a Senior Life Underwriter for Colonial Life and Accident Insurance Company where she assesses an individual's expected mortality to determine insurability, has developed an underwriting training guide for agents across the United States, and oversees the underwriting of twenty-three states; and
Whereas, Mrs. Scott, wife of state Representative John L. Scott, Jr., is very active in the community, serving as a volunteer in the United Way of the Midlands and Children Unlimited, an organization that specializes in the placement of special need children with adoptive families; and
