COMMENDING ROBERT E. JUSTICE OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE AS THE SCOUT EXECUTIVE OF PALMETTO COUNCIL NO. 549 OF THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA.
Whereas, Robert E. Justice of Spartanburg County joined the Boy Scouts in 1939, became an Eagle Scout in 1943, and has been actively involved in scouting ever since; and
Whereas, Mr. Justice became a professional scouter on December 15, 1951; in November, 1973, he was honored by being selected the Scout Executive for Palmetto Council No. 549 of the Boy Scouts of America; the Palmetto Council is comprised of Spartanburg, Cherokee, Union, Chester, York, and Lancaster Counties; and
Whereas, in 1981, he raised one and a half million dollars to upgrade Camp Lea in Cowpens; he also rebuilt Camp Palmetto, now known as Camp Bob Hardin, in Saluda, North Carolina; in 1989, he established a $650,000 endowment in honor of H.W. Close; and he was instrumental in the construction of the new Council Service Center, which houses a store and museum in Spartanburg which opened on December 4, 1990; and
Whereas, at the time of his retirement as the Scout Executive of Palmetto Council No. 549 on December 31, 1993, he was recognized as the oldest tenured scout executive in the southern region and third-oldest tenured scout executive in scouting nationally; and
Whereas, Robert E. Justice has contributed greatly of his time and talents to this worthwhile endeavor and is highly deserving of recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commends Robert E. Justice of Spartanburg County for his outstanding service as the Scout Executive of Palmetto Council No. 549 of the Boy Scouts of America.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Justice.
