COMMENDING REVEREND JOSEPH D. MATHIS OF GREENVILLE COUNTY FOR HIS EXEMPLARY LIFETIME OF SERVICE TO OTHERS.
Whereas, Joseph Mathis of Greenville County was a standout football player in his younger days at Allen University in Columbia; he was captain of the team for two years, and, during his final year at Allen, the team went undefeated in the regular season; and
Whereas, in 1946, Joe Mathis accepted a job as teacher of health and physical education and coach of football and basketball at his alma mater, Sterling High School of Greenville, and later he organized and coached baseball and track; and
Whereas, he coached the football Sterling High Tigers to regional fame and three state AAA championships during his sixteen-year tenure; and
Whereas, he passed along to his students the importance of self-confidence, which greatly aided them in adult life; and
Whereas, in 1992, he was inducted into the Piedmont Athletic Hall of Fame and nominated to the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame; and
Whereas, he furthered his education beyond college at South Carolina State, Virginia State, North Carolina College in Durham, and Clemson and earned a master's degree at Atlanta University in social science; and
Whereas, after coaching, he entered the ministry and was ordained a Christian Methodist Episcopal minister under the pastorate of Reverend R.O. Langford at Israel CME Church; and Whereas, Reverend Joseph Mathis pastored Bethel CME Church in Blacksburg and Mount Olive CME Church in Easley, where the congregation built a new worship hall under his pastorate; and
Whereas, he retired from the active ministry in 1993 after thirty-one years at Young Laymen CME Church; and
Whereas, he continued to work for the Greenville County School District after he ended his coaching career; before retiring in 1977, he taught social studies at League Junior High School, was assistant principal at Greenville High, and worked as a placement coordinator at Donaldson and Enoree Vocational Schools; and
Whereas, he served with distinction on the Greenville City Council, being elected in 1979 and 1983; and
Whereas, he has given freely of his time and talents to countless persons and causes over the years and is regarded as a genuine role model for all in the community; and
Whereas, he has been a leader all of his adult life and has accomplished more good than most people will ever be able to recount. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commends Reverend Joseph D. Mathis of Greenville County for his exemplary lifetime of service to others.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Reverend Mathis.
