So, the Bill, as amended, was read the second time and ordered to third reading.
It is regrettable that District #81 plan was adopted by the House of Representatives. The plan takes approximately one-fourth (1/4) of the City of Aiken and places those residents with Edgefield County. Citizens who live within the city limits of Aiken are now placed in a most inconvenient position. They will travel long distances to see their representative and will have to call their representative with long distance calls. They will be represented by someone from Edgefield. There is no commonality or community of interest in this plan. The proposal does not consider the welfare of the people.
The areas of Warrenville, Graniteville and Vaucluse belong in the Horsecreek Valley House District and should not be represented by someone from Aiken but someone from the Valley. The people of Belvedere who have also been included in the Aiken area should be represented by a representative from North Augusta or Belvedere. The people have been wronged.
Rep. IRENE K. RUDNICK
Rep. WILKINS moved that when the House adjourns, it adjourn not to meet in Local Session tomorrow and in Statewide Session at 10:00 A.M. Monday, May 16, which was rejected by a division vote of 50 to 55.
Rep. BAXLEY moved that when the House adjourns it adjourn not to meet in Local Session tomorrow and to meet in Statewide Session Monday, May 16, at Noon, which was rejected by a division vote of 22 to 81.
