TO EXPRESS THE APPRECIATION AND ADMIRATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY FOR THE OUTSTANDING AND DISTINGUISHED SERVICE OF DR. E. F. MATHIS, SR. UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM MT. ZION BAPTIST CHURCH AND TO WISH HIM MANY HAPPY AND FULFILLING YEARS.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly note that Dr. E. F. Mathis, Sr. has retired after fifty years of dedicated and distinguished service in the ministry; and
Whereas, a native of the Greenwood County community of Epworth, Dr. Mathis entered the ministry at age seventeen and began his education in Washington and continued at Morris College in Sumter; and
Whereas, Dr. Mathis, who served as pastor of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Belton for almost 28 years, contributed significantly in fund-raising efforts to provide the church family with a new parsonage and sanctuary; and
Whereas, Dr. Mathis has held several pastorates over the years and various church-related positions of distinction, including Vice-Moderator, Moderator, and Chairman of the Trustee Board of the Rocky River Association, Historian and Budget Chairman of the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina; and
Whereas, Dr. Mathis served his community as a Mason, a member of the Order of the Eastern Stars, and as the first black to be named president of the Belton precinct; and
Whereas, he also served his state as a trustee to the S. C. School for the Deaf and Blind. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly express their appreciation to Dr. E. F. Mathis, Sr., for a half a century of distinguished and dedicated service to his church, community, and state on the occasion of his retirement and wish for him many happy and fulfilling years.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. E. F. Mathis, Sr.
