EXTENDING THE CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO MR. MELVIN CRUM OF ROWESVILLE UPON BEING NAMED THE "1996 SMALL FARMER OF THE YEAR."
Whereas, Mr. Melvin Crum was recently presented the 1996 Small Farmer of the Year Award for the State of South Carolina at the Eighth Annual Small Farms Conference in Charleston; and
Whereas, Mr. Crum, a native of Bowman, South Carolina, currently resides in Rowesville, South Carolina, with his wife Yvonne and his daughter Jenna; and
Whereas, Mr. Crum's family farm, established by his great grandfather, has been in the family for more than 100 years; and
Whereas, Mr. Crum farms 900 acres of wheat, oats, corn, and soybeans, and is also a swine producer; and
Whereas, Mr. Crum is a former Executive Director of the State Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS), which is now called the Farm Service Agency, and currently serves as President of the Orangeburg Young Farmer Organization which he was instrumental in establishing; and
Whereas, the Mr. Crum's community activities extend beyond working with the farmers in Orangeburg, as he served on the Orangeburg District 2 School Board for 20 years and, at one time, was Chairman of the Board; and
Whereas, Mr. Crum is a proud graduate of South Carolina State University, where he received an undergraduate degree in Business Administration and a Master's Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation and Counseling; and
Whereas, Mr. Crum is a truly outstanding individual, as the award bestowed upon him indicates; and
Whereas, it is fitting that the General Assembly recognize Mr. Crum's many contributions to farming in our great state.
Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Mr. Melvin Crum of Rowesville upon being named the "1996 Small Farmer of the Year".
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Melvin Crum.
