The Senate assembled at 11:00 A.M., the hour to which it stood adjourned and was called to order by the PRESIDENT.
A quorum being present the proceedings were opened with a devotion by the Chaplain as follows:
Beloved, hear the Prophet Isaiah, Chapter 43 (vv. 1-2):
"But now thus says the Lord,
`He who created you, O Jacob,
He who formed you, O Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you; and through the rivers,
They shall not overwhelm you;
When you walk through fire you
shall not be burned, and the flame
shall not consume you'."
Let us pray.
Eternal Father, we remember that in the olden days danger and insecurity were phrased in terms like "over-flowing waters," "the swelling of Jordan" and "flames of fire."
In our modern days things like space travel, economic or political traps, sophisticated chemistry and physics bring us a sense of real danger and insecurity.
Lord give us a simple faith! We believe Your Word to convey the same promises as of old.
Help us to think and act this day in such ways that our consciences will be clear because we claim the promise,
"When you pass through the waters
They shall not overwhelm you."
Amen.
The PRESIDENT called for Petitions, Memorials, Presentments of Grand Juries and
such like papers.
