TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE DEATH OF MR. PAUL KNOX OF NORTH AUGUSTA, AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mr. Paul Knox of North Augusta who died on April 1, 1998; and
Whereas, "Professor Knox", as he was affectionately named and known by many, was a native of Abbeville County, a devoted husband and father, a beloved and highly respected citizen of his community, and was retired after many years as an educator, coach, and superintendent of the area schools; and
Whereas, he was a faithful member of Grace United Methodist Church, was part and parcel of the community, from school to church, to the Chamber of Commerce, to the Lion's Club, the Masonic Lodge, and wherever the need for quiet example, leadership, and participation existed; and
Whereas, in addition to holding the area school system together in the late twenties, when funding was virtually nonexistent and teachers had to be paid in script, Mr. Knox laid a solid foundation upon which the local area schools and education systems are presently based; and
Whereas, Mr. Knox is also known as the father of North Augusta football, having coached the first team and taking great pride in the fact that not only was his 1927 team undefeated, but no team succeeded in crossing the North Augusta goal line that season; and
Whereas, he and Mrs. Knox were recently awarded the Sertoma Club's Service to Mankind honor, and to all who knew or were influenced by Mr. Knox's quiet example, he was both an asset to the community and a "gentleman of the old school" who will be sorely missed; and
Whereas, Mr. Knox is survived by his wife, Kathleen Wiggins Knox, daughters, Katherine Fowler of Morristown, Tennessee, Miriam Harter of Midland, Michigan, Geneva Larson of Carmel, Indiana, ten grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren; and
Whereas, the members of the Senate, by this resolution, would like to express their deepest sympathy to his widow, his children, family, and friends upon the death of this truly fine gentleman. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate hereby express their deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Paul Knox of North Augusta who died on April 1, 1998.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his widow, Mrs. Katherine Wiggins Knox of North Augusta.
