TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE ESTILL "LADY GATORS" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND ITS COACHES ON WINNING THE 1997-98 CLASS A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
Whereas, the Estill High School "Lady Gators" girls basketball team won the Class A state championship by defeating the Indian Land "Lady Warriors" at the Carolina Coliseum in Columbia; and
Whereas, the Lady Gators finished with an outstanding record of 26-6 and won their second consecutive Class A state championship; and
Whereas, the Lady Gators won an unprecedented sixth straight Region 5-A title and sailed through the first four rounds of the state playoffs by defeating St. George, Blackville-Hilda, Wagener-Salley, and Green Sea-Floyds by a combined score of 264-185; and
Whereas, the Lady Gators senior players, during their four years, compiled a tremendous overall record of 97-22, a conference mark in Region 5-A of 50-2 and lost only four games to other Class A schools; and
Whereas, the Lady Gators Head Coach Cecil Jenkins and Assistant Coaches Carey Pringle and Thomas Dawkins exhibited extraordinary leadership and guidance throughout the season; and
Whereas, the Lady Gators championship basketball team includes the following young ladies: Ferlisha Warren, Leslie Williams, Tashea Ginn, Talisha Ginn, Brandi Smith, Lisa Sanders, Mary Ann Russell, Lakaisha Cohen, Sharonda Gordon, Joy Walker, Tonya Heyward, Monica Cuyler, Tiesha Frazier, Angela Jenkins and Shamika Garvin; and
Whereas, the Lady Gators of Estill High School conducted themselves in a championship manner both on and off the court during this special season and its players and coaches are especially deserving of post-season honor and recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly congratulate the Estill High School "Lady Gators" basketball team and its coaches on winning the Class A state basketball championship.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Head Basketball Coach Cecil Jenkins.
