A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY OF DR. CHARLES C. WANNAMAKER OF NORTH CHARLESTON, A FAMILY PHYSICIAN AND ELECTED REPRESENTATIVE OF CHARLESTON COUNTY, UPON HIS DEATH.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Charles C. Wannamaker, a family physician and elected representative of Charleston County; and

Whereas, Dr. Wannamaker was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and received a degree from the University of South Carolina and the South Carolina Medical College; and

Whereas, a Navy veteran of World War II and Korea, he served as a physician at the Naval Hospital in 1954 and went into private practice in North Charleston, where he served as a family doctor for 42 years; and

Whereas, Dr. Wannamaker served Roper Hospital, beginning as an intern and later serving as the hospital's chief of staff and also established the licensed practical nursing program; and

Whereas, he was appointed to the Cooper River School District Board where he served for eight years and was the first to be elected to the consolidated school board where he served for eight years before being elected to Charleston County Council; and

Whereas, Dr. Wannamaker, during his 16 years on County Council, rarely missed a meeting and was consistently one of its most fiscally conservative members; and

Whereas, Dr. Wannamaker was elected to his fifth term on Charleston County Council in November 1996, receiving the second-highest number of votes in Charleston County, surpassed only by United States Senator Strom Thurmond; and

Whereas, Dr. Wannamaker, in his 32 years of elective service, was a dedicated public servant and a true friend to all the citizens of Charleston County; and

Whereas, the respect in which he was held by colleagues, peers, and the community is evidenced by the fact that the 1,015-acre county park now under construction in North Charleston was renamed Wannamaker County Park; and

Whereas, with the loss of this fine man at the age of 73, Charleston and South Carolina have lost an honorable and dedicated public servant, a caring physician, a public-spirited community leader, a true gentleman, and a good friend; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to extend their sincere condolences to his wife, children, and other members of his family upon his death. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly hereby express their deepest sympathy to the family of Dr. Charles C. Wannamaker, one of South Carolina's most dedicated and accomplished public servants and physicians, upon his death.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his widow, Mrs. Betty Poe Wannamaker.
