A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE DORCHESTER COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF ITS CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1997.

Whereas, Dorchester County was formed by an Act of the South Carolina General Assembly on February 25, 1897; and

Whereas, February 25, 1997 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Dorchester County; and

Whereas, the Dorchester County Centennial Committee has planned to celebrate this special year through various events scheduled throughout the county during the week of February 21-25, 1997, including a time capsule dedication, historic train excursions, special centennial services, art exhibits, musical concerts, and parades in the towns of Ridgeville, Saint George, and Summerville; and

Whereas, the citizens of Dorchester County have made enumerable contributions to the State of South Carolina and to the United States; and

Whereas, Dorchester County has contributed to the history of transportation, as the first commercial railroad system in the United States covered a majority of the county and was responsible for the formation along the railroad tracks of several communities, which derived their names from freight or passenger stops; and

Whereas, the citizens of Dorchester County have remained active in the social, cultural, religious, and political aspects of our State; and

Whereas, Dorchester County has drawn national acclaim for its unique community festivals, including the World Grits Festival, the Flowertown Festival, the Turpentine Festival, the Cultural Arts Festival, and the See Saw Days. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly recognize Dorchester County on the occasion of its centennial celebration on Tuesday, February 25, 1997, and wish the county citizens many more years of continued success.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. William Hearn, Dorchester County Council Chairman.
