EXPRESSING SORROW AT THE DEATH OF OLIN F. "SCRAP" BERRY OF SILVERSTREET, NEWBERRY COUNTY, AND EXTENDING SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
Whereas, Olin F. "Scrap" Berry of Silverstreet, Newberry County, died December 21, 1996, at the age of seventy-five; and
Whereas, Mr. Berry was born in Silverstreet on April 9, 1921, the son of Joe Clark Berry and Clara Swindler Berry, and was an Army veteran of World War II and a retired merchant; and
Whereas, he served as Mayor of Silverstreet and as a town councilman for the Town of Silverstreet and was a member of the Newberry County Department of Social Services Board where he served for twenty-seven years from 1969 to 1996; and
Whereas, he was a devoted churchman, serving as a trustee of Trinity United Methodist Church; and he was a charter member of the Silverstreet Fire Department where he served both as fire chief and as assistant chief; and he was honored as the Newberry County Fireman of the Year in 1982; and
Whereas, he is survived by his wife, Shirley Abrams Berry; a daughter and son-in-law, Sally Berry Hillman and Bill Hillman of Newberry; two grandchildren, Keala and Kristen Hillman of Newberry; and
Whereas, Mr. Berry was an outstanding member of his community and a dedicated public servant; he was respected and admired by all who knew him, and his presence will be missed greatly. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, expresses sorrow at the death of Olin F. "Scrap" Berry of Silverstreet, Newberry County, and extends sympathy to his family and friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Berry's family.
