CONGRATULATING THE LAURENCE MANNING ACADEMY SWAMPCATS OF CLARENDON COUNTY ON WINNING THE SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION (SCISAA) DIVISION III STATE FOOTBALL CROWN FOR 1997.
Whereas, the Laurence Manning Academy Swampcats of Clarendon County defeated the Cyclones of Porter Gaud 32-30 to capture the South Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (SCISAA) Division III state football crown for 1997; and
Whereas, the Swampcats ended the 1997 campaign with a perfect 13-0 record; and
Whereas, Mike Windham is the Head Coach of the Laurence Manning football team and his assistant coaches are Jerry Wright, Bill Brewer, Steve Gamble, G.G. Cutter, and Marshall Morehead; and
Whereas, Kenneth Beatson serves as team trainer and Dr. Ken Johnson is the team physician, Jack Gibson is the school's athletic director, and Eugene Nalley is the headmaster; and
Whereas, the 1997 Swampcats varsity football roster included Martin Gamble, John Cutter, Harvin Hall, Derek Lee, Jonathan Shugart, Lee Masincupp, Steven Felder, Eric Osteen, Brandon Smith, Ryan Shumpert, Donnie McCord, Al Nelson, Michael Cox, Rob Thompson, Michael Hovermale, Jeremy Evans, Dean Jayroe, Michael Walters, Brooks Morehead, Jason McKnight, Keith Govier, Josh Wilkes, Josh Yates, Curt Richburg, Corey Osteen, and Mark Furse; and
Whereas, the 1997 Swampcats exhibited tremendous talent, courage, unity, and dedication and are highly deserving of special commendation as state champions in SCISAA Division III. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulates the Laurence Manning Academy Swampcats of Clarendon County on winning the SCISAA Division III state football crown for 1997.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to each of the varsity players listed above, to the team's head coach, each of the assistant coaches, the team trainer, the team physician, the athletic director, and the headmaster, all as named above.
