A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

EXPRESSING THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF FIRE CHIEF JAMES TERRELL SMITH, JR., OF HORRY AND GEORGETOWN COUNTIES AND EXTENDING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS WIFE, OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS, AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly where saddened to learn of the death of Chief James Terrell Smith, Jr., of the Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire Department who died June 18, 2000; and

Whereas, Chief Smith, born in Clayton County, Georgia, was the son of Martha Coney Smith and the late James Terrell Smith, Sr.; and

Whereas, he was the Fire Chief of the Center Fire Department and served as the Fire Chief of the Cayce Fire Department for eight years; and

Whereas, Chief Smith was the current fire Chief of the Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire Department; and

Whereas, he was a member of the South Carolina State Firemen's Association and the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs for over twenty years; and

Whereas, Chief Smith was known as the "Unofficial Mayor of the South Strand" and mentored many people who sought a career in the fire service; and

Whereas, he was married to Ora Sue Smith, and together they reared two sons, James Terrell Smith, III and George W. Smith; and

Whereas, Chief Smith was respected, admired, and loved in Horry and Georgetown Counties and throughout South Carolina, and he will be greatly missed; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly want Chief Smith's widow, his other family members, and his many friends to know that they are uppermost in their thoughts and have the members deepest sympathy. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, express profound sorrow upon the death of Fire Chief James Terrell Smith, Jr., of Horry and Georgetown Counties and extend deepest sympathy to his wife, other family members, and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Chief James Terrell Smith, Jr.
