TO EXPRESS THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE CLEMSON UNIVERSITY "LADY TIGERS" WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM FOR THEIR MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS DURING THE STELLAR 1998-99 SEASON, AND FOR MAKING CLEMSON UNIVERSITY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HISTORY BY ENDING THE SEASON AS THE HIGHEST RANKED TEAM IN THE SCHOOL'S HISTORY WITH A #10 RANKING IN THE FINAL ASSOCIATED PRESS POLL, AND A # 13 RANKING IN THE FINAL USA TODAY POLL, TO RECOGNIZE HEAD COACH JIM DAVIS AND HIS STAFF FOR THE EXCEPTIONAL SEASON, AND TO SPECIFICALLY RECOGNIZE THE TEAM'S SENIOR CLASS AS THESE FOUR LADIES COMPRISE THE WINNINGEST CLASS IN CLEMSON UNIVERSITY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HISTORY.
Whereas, the Clemson University's rich and thrilling basketball heritage continues as the "Lady Tigers" women's basketball team completed the 1998-99 season as the highest ranked team in the university's history with a #10 national ranking in the final Associated Press poll and a #13 national ranking in the final USA Today poll; and
Whereas, this exceptional team won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship; and
Whereas, the Lady Tigers then advanced to the round of the Final 16 in the NCAA National Tournament; and
Whereas, during the course of the regular season the Lady Tigers posted twenty-six wins, which is a school record, and which includes such accomplishments as defeating four Final 16 teams (Iowa State, Duke, Louisiana State, and North Carolina), defeating five Top 20 teams, and twice defeating Duke University, finalist in the NCAA Tournament; and
Whereas, the Lady Tigers' senior class won more games than any other class in Lady Tiger history. These seniors are Amy Geren, Itoro Umoh, Natasha Anderson, and Nikki Blassingame; and
Whereas, Itoro Umoh and Amy Geren were selected as first team All Atlantic Coast Conference players; and
Whereas, Amy Geren was also named the national three-point shooting champion; and
Whereas, three of the senior women, Amy Geren, Itoro Umoh, and Natasha Anderson, also achieved the personal goal of being one thousand point scorers during the course of their careers; and
Whereas, the other talented women who made up this team of champions are: Nuria Forns, Krystal Scott, Andrea Gaines, Angie Cossey, Erin Batth, Amirah Leonard, Datishella Byrd, Joanie Mungro, and Miesha Mattison; and
Whereas, led by Head Coach Jim Davis, the coaching staff consists of the assistant coaches: Carey Green, Courtney Johnson, and Yolanda Settles, the trainer: Donna Deckard-Bullock, the managers: Nicole Brice, Catherine Compton, and Emilee Hopkins; and the strength training coaches: Brandon Hourigan and Nicole Molinari; and
Whereas, the General Assembly, along with the citizens of the Palmetto State, are extremely proud of these fine young women athletes, their team spirit and unity, superb talent, and thrilling 1998-99 record-setting season. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina express their congratulations to the Clemson University "Lady Tigers" women's basketball team for their many accomplishments during the stellar 1998-99 season, and for making Clemson University women's basketball history by ending the season as the highest ranked team in the school's history with a #10 ranking in the final Associated Press poll, and a # 13 ranking in the final USA Today poll, recognize Head Coach Jim Davis and his staff for the exceptional season, and specifically recognize the team's senior class as these four ladies comprise the winningest class in Clemson University women's basketball history.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Head Coach Jim Davis.
