TO COMMEND SANDRA KANGAS FOR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE OF HER DUTIES AS A PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER WHILE EMPLOYED BY THE AIKEN DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY AND TO CONGRATULATE SANDRA KANGAS ON THE OCCASION OF HER RECEIVING THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF INDUSTRIAL SECURITY EXCELLENCE IN LAW ENFORCEMENT AWARD.
Whereas, Public Safety Officer First Class Sandra Kangas began her career with the Aiken Department of Public Safety in January of 1995. Previously she served with the Aiken County Sheriff's Office and is a certified police officer and firefighter; and
Whereas, Officer Kangas worked in the Patrol Division until January, 1998. Her current work is with the Police and Community Together (PACT) Team assigned to the Smith Hazel Community where she has organized a senior citizens' seminar that discusses topics such as safety, scams, volunteer opportunities, and other subjects to improve the safety and quality of life for senior citizens; and
Whereas, Officer Kangas also developed a "Vials for Life" program that will aid emergency responders to medical calls. The "Vials for Life" program features a magnetic sticker on the outside of a resident's refrigerator that alerts medical responders that vials with pertinent medical information have been placed inside the refrigerator when unconscious or incoherent patients are unable to provide this vital, lifesaving information; and
Whereas, Officer Kangas has not forgotten the youth of the community. She has adopted a class of alternative students at a middle school in her community. She meets and mentors these students, takes them out on tours, talks out their problems with them, and has had a very positive influence on these young people as well as on the community she serves. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Sandra Kangas for outstanding performance of her duties as a public safety officer while employed by the Aiken Department of Public Safety and congratulate Sandra Kangas on the occasion of her receiving the American Society of Industrial Security Excellence In Law Enforcement Award.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Sandra Kangas of Aiken.
