A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE SINCERE GRATITUDE AND APPRECIATION OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO JODY LANE OF JOHNSONVILLE, AND THREE OTHER RESCUERS FOR THEIR QUICK AND SELFLESS ACTIONS ON THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 15, 2000, IN FREEING A SERIOUSLY INJURED MOTORIST TRAPPED IN HIS BURNING VEHICLE AND RESCUING HIM IMMEDIATELY BEFORE THE VEHICLE EXPLODED INTO FLAMES.

Whereas, on January 15, 2000, a serious car accident occurred on the Johnsonville Highway when a vehicle driven by Joel Benton Whitesides of Johnsonville failed to round a curve, ran off the road, and crashed into a tree; and

Whereas, the vehicle immediately burst into flames with the driver trapped inside, seriously injured; and

Whereas, Jody Lane was headed home on the Johnsonville Highway when he rounded a curve and came upon a man in the middle of the road flagging him down; and

Whereas, Jody Lane stopped and joined three other motorists working to free the trapped driver. They used a small sledgehammer and a tire tool to shatter the car window and force a door open. One of the rescuers crawled into the car and freed Mr. Whitesides' legs which were trapped; and

Whereas, at this point fire engulfed the entire hood of the car. Jody Lane and the other rescuers pulled the driver out of his car just before the front seat burst into flames; and

Whereas, soon thereafter, the South Lynches Fire and Rescue Squad and the Florence County Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived on the accident scene. The South Lynches Chief, Sam Brockington, credited the rescuers with saving Mr. Whitesides' life; and

Whereas, it is appropriate that the General Assembly pause in its deliberations and recognize that, by their quick thinking and selfless actions, Jody Lane and three other rescuers saved the life of this trapped motorist. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, express their sincere gratitude and appreciation that Jody Lane of Johnsonville and three other motorists took quick and selfless action on the night of January 15, 2000, to free a seriously injured motorist trapped in his burning vehicle and rescue him immediately before the vehicle exploded into flames.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Jody Lane of Johnsonville.
