TO COMMEND THE MEMBERS OF THE COWPENS LIONS CLUB ORGANIZED IN 1951 UPON THE CELEBRATION OF THEIR FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY ON JUNE 18, 2001, AND TO EXTEND TO THEM MANY MORE YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina praise the members of the Cowpens Lions Club for their fifty years of loyalty and devotion to the club and its motto, "We Serve"; and
Whereas, the Lions Club International was founded in 1917 in Chicago, Illinois by Melvin Jones with the idea of forming a club which would work toward the betterment of the members' communities and the world; and
Whereas, the Cowpens Lions Club was organized in 1951 under the same pretenses and is part of what is considered the world's largest service organization with members in one hundred-eighty countries. The members volunteer their services in several projects that benefit the community; and
Whereas, the Cowpens Lions Club will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary on June 28, 2001, at the Piedmont Club in Spartanburg. The celebration will include the members' wives, many state and local officials, and special guests; and
Whereas, the Cowpens Lions Club is led by Gilbert Crow, President; Joe Walker, Secretary; and William Biggerstaff, Treasurer. Members include Tom Abbot, L. B. Brown, Carson H. Childress, Jack Coyle, Sr., Robert Ellis, John Hill, Hubert Martin, John Harold McCraw, Benjamin F. Quinn, S. B. Thrift, William White, John Fortune, Charles Grant, Ric Makupson, Fred McCray, Robert Mark Quinn, Terry Phillips, Darryl Ehlich, and charter members Richard Cash and Howard E. Clarkson; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly honor these men of the Cowpens Lions Club for their dedication to service for the past fifty years and their commitment to the continuation of this meaningful club. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend the members of the Cowpens Lions Club organized in 1951 upon the celebration of their fiftieth anniversary on June 18, 2001, and extend to them many more years of service to the community.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Cowpens Lions Club.
