A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING REVEREND DR. WILLIE E. GIVENS, JR., OF CHARLESTON COUNTY AS HE COMPLETES HIS TERM AS PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA STATE BAPTIST EDUCATIONAL AND MISSIONARY CONVENTION.

Whereas, Reverend Dr. Willie E. Givens, Jr., is a native of Charleston, South Carolina; and

Whereas, he earned an A. A. degree in General Education from Palmer College and a B. A. degree in Religion from Charleston Southern University, both located in Charleston, South Carolina, a Master of Theology degree from Southern Bible Seminary in Birmingham, Alabama, and a Doctor of Divinity degree from Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina; and

Whereas, Dr. Givens is married to the former Miss Juanita Harrison, and together they are the proud parents of four children; and

Whereas, he is Pastor of First Missionary Baptist Church in Summerville, South Carolina, President of the Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention of South Carolina, Past President of the Baptist Educational and Missionary Brotherhood Convention of South Carolina, Vice Moderator of the Charleston County Baptist Association, First Vice President of the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc.; and

Whereas, he is a member of the Board of the National Bank of South Carolina, a member of the Advisory Board of the First Steps State Educational Program, a Trustee of both Morris and Benedict Colleges, and a member of the Board of Directors of Santee Cooper; and

Whereas, Dr. Givens is the recipient of numerous awards including the South Carolina Order of the Palmetto; and

Whereas, Dr. Givens has gained notoriety as a fundraiser who headed the effort to raise the funds necessary to retire the outstanding debt used to finance the construction of the O. R. Reuben Church on the campus of Morris College and to purchase the new Baptist headquarters building located in the City of Columbia; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations to recognize the many accomplishments of Dr. Givens as he completes his term as President of the South Carolina State Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize the many accomplishments of Dr. Willie E. Givens, Jr., of Charleston County as he completes his term as President of the South Carolina State Baptist Educational and Missionary Convention.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Willie E. Givens, Jr.
