TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-39-101 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT STUDENTS WHO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE TWELVE FULL YEARS OF ACADEMIC WORK AS SPECIFIED BY THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION BUT WHO DO NOT COMPLETE ALL UNITS REQUIRED FOR A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR WHO DO NOT PASS ALL REQUIRED EXIT EXAMS SHALL BE AWARDED A SPECIAL DIPLOMA SIGNIFYING THESE ACHIEVEMENTS RATHER THAN RECEIVING A CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. The 1976 Code is amended to read:
"Section 59-39-101. Students who successfully complete twelve full years of academic work as specified by the State Board of Education but who do not complete all units required for a high school diploma or who do not pass all required exit exams shall be awarded a special diploma signifying these achievements rather than receiving a certificate of attendance. The contents of the special diplomas shall be stipulated by the Department of Education by regulation."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
