TO RECOGNIZE RUFUS CALVIN BARKLEY, JR.'S, LIFE AND HIS OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS AND GENEROUS CONTRIBUTIONS, LEADERSHIP, AND SERVICE TO THE CITY OF CHARLESTON AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY AND SINCERE CONDOLENCES OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO MR. BARKLEY'S WONDERFUL FAMILY AND IMMEASURABLE NUMBER OF FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Rufus C. Barkley, Jr., of Charleston on May 5, 2001; and
Whereas, Mr. Barkley was the loving husband of the former Nella Gray of Charlottesville, Virginia, the devoted father of Rufus Calvin Barkley, III, Joseph Miles Barkley, and Nella Barkley Schools, and the beloved grandfather of eight grandchildren; and
Whereas, Mr. Barkley graduated from Episcopal High School of Alexandria, Virginia, and was a graduate of the University of Virginia. Shortly after graduating from the Harvard School of Business Administration Advanced Management Program, he joined the family-founded business, Cameron and Barkley, which under his guidance became one of the nation's largest distributors of industrial supplies; and
Whereas, Mr. Barkley's business achievements were recognized in 1996 by the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce which named him the Business Leader of the Year. Later this year he is scheduled to be inducted into the South Carolina Business Hall of Fame; and
Whereas, Mr. Barkley served with distinction in the United States Army and attained the rank of First Lieutenant; and
Whereas, Rufus Barkley also took an active role in the community in which he lived. He was chairman of the Charleston Development Board, a director of the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Committee for Better Race Relations, and on the Board of Trustees of the College of Charleston; and
Whereas, a faithful, devoted member and always active in his church, Mr. Barkley was a former senior warden of St. Philip's Episcopal Church; and
Whereas, Mr. Barkley was an unassuming man with a ready smile. He was known for his devotion to his family, and he was a humble, quiet, but very strong person who had a huge spirit of generosity and civic engagement; and
Whereas, he was greatly admired and well respected throughout the State, and he will be greatly missed but never forgotten; and
Whereas, it is most befitting for the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina to pause in its deliberations to recognize the distinguished career and contributions of this prominent South Carolina businessman and favorite son. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize Rufus Calvin Barkley, Jr.'s, life and his outstanding achievements and generous contributions, leadership, and service to the City of Charleston and to the State and extend their sincere condolences to his wonderful family and immeasurable number of friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Rufus C. Barkley, Jr.
