TO COMMEND TAYLOR BOWMAN OF FORT MILL FOR HIS TREMENDOUS VOLUNTEER EFFORTS TO IMPROVE THE EDUCATION OF CHILDREN IN HIS COMMUNITY, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON BEING NAMED A RECIPIENT OF THE 2002 PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD.
Whereas, Taylor Bowman has achieved national recognition for exemplary volunteer service by receiving a 2002 Prudential Spirit of Community Award; and
Whereas, the awards program, now in its seventh year, is conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP); the program honors young volunteers across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving their communities, and a record twenty-eight thousand high school and middle level students submitted applications for this year's program; and
Whereas, Taylor Bowman, an eighteen-year-old senior at Fort Mill High School, earned this award by giving generously of his time and energy to develop and lead a mentoring program that pairs high school athletes with potential at-risk students from local elementary schools; and
Whereas, Taylor's idea for the program came after he had success tutoring a new student in his mother's third-grade class who was from Puerto Rico; soon other teachers were requesting Taylor's help with their limited-English and academically challenged students; and
Whereas, Taylor was able to recruit thirty-seven members of his high school cross-country team along with other friends to work as mentors; he applied for grant money to purchase incentive rewards and to fund a hot dog picnic, a Christmas party, and other exciting activities, and Taylor's success has inspired other schools to create similar programs; and
Whereas, young people like Taylor Bowman who give of their time and talents to improve the plight of others will help to ensure not only a bright future for the Palmetto State, but the overall greatness of American society as well. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Taylor Bowman of Fort Mill for his tremendous volunteer efforts to improve the education of children in his community and congratulate him on being named a recipient of the 2002 Prudential Spirit of Community Award.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Taylor Bowman of Fort Mill.
