RECOGNIZING THE NATIONAL GUARD AND RESERVE AS ESSENTIAL TO THE STRENGTH AND WELL-BEING OF OUR NATION AND STATE, AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST APPRECIATION AND SUPPORT FOR THE THOUSANDS OF SOUTH CAROLINIANS PROUDLY SERVING IN THE NATIONAL GUARD AND RESERVE.
Whereas, in the highest American tradition, there are more than twelve thousand patriotic South Carolinians voluntarily serving in the South Carolina Army and Air National Guard, as well as all branches of the Reserve; and
Whereas, in every war that Americans have been called upon to protect liberty and freedom, South Carolinians serving in the National Guard and Reserve have taken up arms to defend our nation; and
Whereas, our nation's security continues to rely on the men and women of the National Guard and Reserve who regularly augment their active duty counterparts around the world with trained, equipped, and ready forces; and
Whereas, in response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001, units of the South Carolina Army National Guard were among the first to be mobilized for Operation Noble Eagle, homeland defense, and Operation Enduring Freedom, the destruction of the worldwide terrorist network; and
Whereas, if these volunteer forces are to continue providing dedicated professional service to our nation and State, it is imperative not only for the public to understand the essential role of the National Guard and Reserve in preserving our national security, but also for all communities, businesses, and employers to encourage participation in the National Guard and Reserve. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize the National Guard and Reserve as essential to the strength and well-being of our nation and State, and express their deepest appreciation and support for the thousands of South Carolinians proudly serving in the National Guard and Reserve, and urge all communities, businesses, and employers to honor these courageous sons and daughters of South Carolina who routinely put their personal lives on hold to defend our nation's interests and the interests of the Free World.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable Donald H. Rumsfeld, United States Secretary of Defense and Major General Stanhope S. Spears, South Carolina Adjutant General.
