TO RECOGNIZE THE FIRM OF WILBUR SMITH ASSOCIATES FOR ITS MANY PROFESSIONAL AND CORPORATE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OVER THE COURSE OF ITS FIFTY-YEAR HISTORY, AND CONGRATULATE IT ON THE OCCASION OF ITS FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION ON MAY 16, 2002.
Whereas, Wilbur Smith Associates was founded in 1952 by Wilbur Smith of Columbia to provide infrastructure and transportation consulting services; and
Whereas, the firm has established an outstanding professional reputation and has grown and diversified to become a global leader in infrastructure planning, engineering, and economics; and
Whereas, Wilbur Smith Associates maintains its corporate headquarters in Columbia, with other offices in Charleston, Greenville, and Myrtle Beach, employing approximately three hundred of its total staff of about one thousand persons from within the State of South Carolina, and contributing significantly to the economy of our State; and
Whereas, the firm has provided professional engineering and planning services for numerous large and small projects throughout South Carolina, in all fifty states, and in more than one hundred countries around the world; and
Whereas, some of the major projects this outstanding firm has undertaken both locally and nationally include:
(1) University of South Carolina:
Williams Brice Stadium (Design)
(2) Wando Containerport in Charleston
(Plan and Design)
(3) Southern Connector Highway in Greenville
(Plan and Design)
(4) Eurotunnel (France to England Tunnel)
(Financial Planning)
(5) Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Virginia
(Plan and Feasibility)
(6) Planning for urban mass transit systems in Singapore, Hong Kong, San Francisco, San Diego, Portland, and other cities around the world
(7) South Carolina State Railroad Plan
(Planning)
(8) High-speed rail passenger studies in Florida, Texas, Michigan, Canada, Thailand, California, Ohio, and in other locations; and
Whereas, Wilbur Smith Associates, with its national and international activities, brings global recognition to the State of South Carolina through its offices in more than forty locations across the United States and around the world; and
Whereas, the firm and its employees demonstrate outstanding corporate citizenship within the State of South Carolina through various initiatives to enhance the life and economic development opportunities for the citizens of this State; and
Whereas, intrinsic in Wilbur Smith Associates' operation is the philosophy that it is impossible to put a dollar figure on the value of providing trustworthy customer services. The firm builds relationships on trust and tries to work with their clients and understand their needs. Clients know they will be treated fairly and will get quality work; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize this truly wonderful organization and its gifted employees on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives recognize the firm of Wilbur Smith Associates for its many professional and corporate accomplishments over the course of its fifty-year history, and congratulate it on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary celebration on May 16, 2002.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Wilbur Smith Associates.
