TO AMEND ACT 387 OF 2000, RELATING TO THE GENERAL APPROPRIATIONS ACT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2000-2001, BY AMENDING PART 1B (TEMPORARY PROVISIONS), PARAGRAPH 1.25 SO AS TO INCREASE FROM SIX TO TWELVE MONTHS THE PERIOD THAT THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION MAY WAIVE THE REQUIRED PRAXIS II SUBJECT AREA EXAM FOR CERTAIN TEACHERS.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Paragraph 1.25, Part 1B, Act 387 of 2000, is amended to read:
"1.25. (SDE: Praxis Waiver) For individuals with work experience and content area degree, but who lack South Carolina teaching credentials, the State Board of Education, for the Critical Need Teacher Certification Program, is authorized to waive, for an individual program eligibility purposes, the satisfactory completion of the Praxis II subject area exam for up to six twelve months after the first day of employment. Attendance at the pre-service institute may be waived if unavoidable circumstances prevent the individual from meeting the requirement; however, attendance is required at the next pre-service institute. The individual granted either or both of these waivers shall be entitled to compensation under the school district's teacher salary schedule based on degree and years experience as a teacher."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
