TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 1-1-706 SO AS TO DESIGNATE CAMDEN MILITARY ACADEMY AS THE OFFICIAL STATE MILITARY ACADEMY.
Whereas, Camden Military Academy was founded in 1958 when it took over the defunct Camden Academy on the grounds of the former 64th Army Air Force (W.W. II) Training Detachment; and
Whereas, the Academy educates boys into men of character and integrity in grades seven through twelve; and
Whereas, following a strict military regimen, Camden Military Academy builds leadership with emphasis on duty, integrity, morality, and self-discipline. With an active Cadet Corps of over three hundred, and Camden-Carlisle alumni in excess of six thousand, the Academy is doing things right. The alumni count teachers, generals, scientists, business owners, musicians, artists, lawyers, doctors, television producers, legislators, and war veterans among its ranks. Utterly dedicated to the development of young men, Camden Military Academy has already demonstrated its long-standing commitment and willingness to uphold South Carolina's ideals of education, patriotism, gentlemanliness, and the best of character. Camden Military Academy is a life-changing experience. South Carolina is pleased to have the Camden Military Academy amongst its educational arsenal; and
Whereas, Camden Military Academy also carries on the living tradition of Carlisle Military School which was located in Bamberg County and founded in 1898; and
Whereas, Camden Military Academy desires to embellish upon the outstanding one hundred three-year-old Camden-Carlisle legacy by seeking the honorary designation as the official military academy of the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Article 9, Chapter 1 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 1-1-706 . (A) Camden Military Academy is designated as the official military academy of the State. The designation of Camden Military Academy as the official military academy of the Sate is an honorary designation and does not bind the State in any way.
(B) The official designation does not create a new state agency or educational institution or qualify Camden Military Academy for state funds.
(C) The official designation does not confer any liability of the State."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
