South Carolina General Assembly

Indicates New Matter

The Senate assembled at 11:00 A.M., the hour to which it stood adjourned, and was called to order by the PRESIDENT.

A quorum being present, the proceedings were opened with a devotion by the Chaplain as follows:

Beloved, hear the words recorded by St. John, Chapter 10:

"Jesus said... I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly."
Let us pray.

Our Father, the world is struggling under the shadows of great burdens brought upon us by the sinful nature of mankind.

In a day when science is adding years to life, making it longer and in many cases more miserable, help us to be possessed of the elements that make for what Jesus called "the abundant life."

May our hearts yearn just as much for the gifts of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness and goodness, as for money and the things money can buy.

We know that money can buy much that is good and necessary for survival; but apart from a vital relationship with the Living Lord, we still may be hungry and threadbare in real happiness... falling far short of the "joy of the Lord."

Add this quality to our lives this day, O Lord.
Amen.

The PRESIDENT called for Petitions, Memorials, Presentments of Grand Juries and such like papers.
