A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE GAFFNEY HIGH SCHOOL "INDIANS" BOYS' VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM ON WINNING THE 2004 CLASS AAAA STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP, TO COMMEND THESE FINE ATHLETES AND THEIR COACHES FOR THE HARD WORK, TREMENDOUS SPIRIT, AND TEAMWORK THAT LED TO THE GAFFNEY "INDIANS" TO A SECOND STRAIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP WIN, AND TO WISH THE TEAM AND ITS COACHES MUCH SUCCESS IN THEIR FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, playing in the Carolina Center in Columbia for the second year in a row, the Gaffney High School "Indians" boys' varsity basketball team won its second Class AAAA state basketball championship by defeating the Lower Richland High School by a final score of 64-60; and

Whereas, back-to-back state championship wins are not something that happens too often. However, the Gaffney "Indians" put on a brilliant performance all season, chalked up victory after victory in league play, and finished their season with a 26-2 record to capture the school's second state title in a row, an accomplishment that has been achieved by only four other teams in Class AAAA conference history; and

Whereas, matched against Lower Richland High School "Diamond Hornets" in the game for the championship, the "Indians" rose to the occasion. Like they had done may times over the course of the season, the "Indians" absorbed a talented opponent's best shot and returned to win the title; and

Whereas, during the season, the "Indians" also recorded two wins in the prestigious Beach Ball Classic and traveled to Rochester, New York, where they defeated East High School in the Image Capital Shootout. Also, during the season the team won twenty-one consecutive games, was undefeated in post-season play, won its thirty-first consecutive home game, and its twenty-second straight win in region play; and

Whereas, exhibiting the very best in hard work, tremendous spirit, and teamwork all season, the Gaffney High School "Indians" 2004 varsity boys' basketball team was superbly trained and coached by Head Coach Mark Huff and Assistant Coaches Mark Ireton, George Hall, David Smith, and Michael Dalton; and

Whereas, the faculty, staff, and student body of Gaffney High School, and the parents and loyal fans of the "Indians" all contributed to this overwhelmingly successful basketball season that led to the 2004 State Class AAAA basketball championship. The contributions, achievements, competitive spirit, and sportsmanship of the players and all concerned are a source of pride to all South Carolinians; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are proud to take this opportunity to commend and congratulate the outstanding 2004 Gaffney High School "Indians" basketball team for their championship performance, and commend them for their good example to others and a job well done. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate the Gaffney High School "Indians" boys' varsity basketball team on completing the school's second straight Class AAAA state basketball championship, commend these fine athletes and their coaches for the hard work, tremendous spirit, and teamwork that made the Gaffney "Indians" an undefeated championship team, and wish them every success in their academic and athletic careers and in all of their future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that, on behalf of the undefeated Gaffney High School "Indians" Boys' State AAAA Championship Basketball Team, a copy of this resolution be presented to Head Coach Mark Huff of Gaffney.
