A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND SWATI SHAH PATEL, FORMER ASSISTANT CHIEF COUNSEL TO THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE, FOR HER EXCELLENT SERVICE TO THE COMMITTEE AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HER IN HER MARRIAGE TO NICK PATEL OF CHARLESTON AND IN HER NEW POSITION AS DEPUTY CHIEF COUNSEL TO GOVERNOR MARK SANFORD.

Whereas, Swati Shah Patel joined the House Judiciary Committee as Assistant Staff Counsel in August 1998 and became Assistant Chief Counsel in August 2000; and

Whereas, she came to the General Assembly after distinguishing herself working for the South Carolina State Reorganization Commission and, before that, working as a law clerk for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the South Carolina Environmental Law Project; and

Whereas, her experience and knowledge have proven invaluable to the Judiciary Committee as it examines complex legislation particularly in the areas of Constitutional Law, Family Law, Campaign Finance and Ethics, and Redistricting; and

Whereas, the Judiciary Committee and its staff will miss her sweet nature, sense of humor, the many mispronunciations of her name by lobbyists, members, and the public, her appreciation for a good soundtrack and a Marvin Gaye melody, her work on the Indian Affairs Commission legislation even though she is "not that kind of Indian", "and her talent for making outrageous amendments germane"; and

Whereas, Swati has embarked on a new career in the Governor's Office and married Nick Patel; and

Whereas, the members of the Judiciary Committee express their gratitude to Swati for her hard work and the professionalism with which she did the work of the committee and House; and

Whereas, her presence will be missed by all; however, we look forward to working with her in her new position with the Governor's Office. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives commend Swati Shah Patel, Former Assistant Chief Counsel to the House Judiciary Committee, for her excellent service to the committee and extend best wishes to her in her new endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Swati Shah Patel.
