VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 56-3-252 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT EACH COUNTY TREASURER MUST POST A SIGN IN EACH OFFICE THAT ACCEPTS PAYMENT FOR MOTOR VEHICLE PROPERTY TAXES AND REGISTRATION FEES THAT INFORMS THE PUBLIC THAT UPON PAYMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLE PROPERTY TAXES AND REGISTRATION FEES THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY WILL FORWARD TO A PERSON HIS NEW MOTOR VEHICLE VALIDATION STICKER OR LICENSE PLATE, OR BOTH, AND HIS REGISTRATION CARD, AND TO PROVIDE THAT THE INFORMATION CONTAINED ON THE SIGN MUST BE PROVIDED IN WRITTEN FORM TO EACH PERSON ONCE HE PAYS HIS MOTOR VEHICLE PROPERTY TAXES AND REGISTRATION FEES.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Article 3, Chapter 3, Title 56 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 56-3-252. (A) Each county treasurer must conspicuously display in each office that accepts payments for county motor vehicle property taxes and state motor vehicle registration fees a sign that contains the following words:
'Upon payment of motor vehicle property taxes and motor vehicle registration fees, the Department of Public Safety shall forward to you your new motor vehicle validation sticker or license plate, or both, and your motor vehicle registration card. Your motor vehicle property tax receipt must be used as proof that your motor vehicle is legally licensed and registered until you receive your motor vehicle validation sticker or license plate, or both, and your motor vehicle registration card.'
(B) The information contained on the sign in subsection (A) must be provided on a written form to each person once he pays his motor vehicle property taxes, or his motor vehicle property taxes and motor vehicle registration fees."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
