RECOGNIZING ROWLAND P. ALSTON, JR., OF SUMTER COUNTY AS THE RECIPIENT OF THE 2002 GREATER SUMTER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FOR HIS LIFETIME OF PUBLIC SERVICE TO THE SUMTER COMMUNITY AND BEYOND.
Whereas, Rowland P. Alston, Jr., of Sumter County has parlayed his love of nature and academic degrees in agricultural education and economy into a nationwide public television program "Making it Grow"; and
Whereas, the Clemson University graduate began his thirty-year record of giving valuable advice to area farmers and backyard gardeners as a Clemson Extension Agent and as the star of a local Sumter ETV program; and
Whereas the ten-year history of the widely viewed "Making it Grow" has resulted in the effective translation by Alston, an institution in agriculture and public television, of his love for Mother Earth and the State of South Carolina into a national reputation for Sumter County and the Palmetto State; and
Whereas, Alston recently was honored also by "Progressive Farmer" as its "Man of the Year" in service to South Carolina for his vital role in bringing the joys of agriculture home to viewers; and
Whereas, this Sumter County native has accomplished much for his home community of Sumter, for Clemson University, and for agriculture in general during his lifetime of service. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

Alston, Jr., of Sumter County as the recipient of the 2002 Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Achievement Award for his lifetime of public service to the Sumter community and beyond.
