A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND COLLIE ELBERT RAYFORD OF COLUMBIA FOR HIS DEDICATION TO TEACHING AND COACHING IN RICHLAND COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT ONE, AND TO RECOGNIZE HIM AS W. G. SANDERS MIDDLE SCHOOL DEDICATES ITS GYMNASIUM IN HIS HONOR.

Whereas, thirty-nine years ago Coach Collie Elbert Rayford began his teaching and coaching career in Richland County School District One and he has coached five undefeated boys' basketball teams and won ten middle school district championships, three girls' volleyball championships, and numerous track and field championships, while touching the lives of thousands of students and teachers; and

Whereas, during his career in Richland County School District One, Coach Rayford operated a recreation program at Fairway Middle School for twenty years. During the summers, he directed the recreational program for the Transportation Institute at South Carolina State University and served as a group leader for the National Youth Sports Camp at the University of South Carolina for thirty years; and

Whereas, outside of work, Coach Rayford enjoys gardening, fishing, bowling, playing golf, and working crossword puzzles. He is a trustee at First Calvary Baptist Church, a lifetime member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and a member of the board of directors of the Kappa Beautillion, Inc, a nonprofit organization through which he has personally financed scholarships for young men; and

Whereas, this Milledgeville, Georgia, native attended Tuskegee University and received his Masters Degree in Health and Physical Education from the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Coach Rayford has shared his life with Beatrice Robinson Rayford, their two children, Anthony Rayford and Deirdre Rayford Little, and two grandchildren, Jacob Lucius Little and Mark Andrew Rayford; and

Whereas, for his love of children and his enthusiasm and commitment to his profession, W. G. Sanders Middle School is dedicating the C. E. Rayford Gymnasium in his honor at a ceremony on Sunday, February 9, 2003. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina commend Collie Elbert Rayford of Columbia for his dedication to teaching and coaching in Richland County School District One and recognize him as W. G. Sanders Middle School dedicates its gymnasium in his honor.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach Collie Elbert Rayford of W. G. Sanders Middle School.
