A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

APPLAUDING SOUTH CAROLINA NATIVE JONATHAN BYRD ON HIS SELECTION AS THE 2002 PGA TOUR ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AND WISHING HIM CONTINUED SUCCESSES ON THE LINKS AND IN LIFE.

Whereas, South Carolina native Jonathan Byrd, playing professional golf out of Woodcreek Farms Country Club, has been voted the 2002 Professional Golf Association Tour Rookie of the Year by his Tour peers; and

Whereas, Byrd joins an elite group of Tour Rookies of the Year, such as Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, John Daly, and Charles Howard III; and

Whereas, Byrd won the 2002 Buick Challenge, had three Top Five finishes, had three Top Ten finishes, clinched a 2003 Masters appearance, and finished thirty-ninth on the money list for 2002, all in just his first year on the PGA Tour and his second year in professional golf; and

Whereas, Jonathan Byrd credits his father, Jim, for introducing him to the game of golf at the age of three as he "shagged" balls for his dad, he grew in talent as he participated in the South Carolina Golf Association Junior programs; and

Whereas, Byrd attended Clemson University where he was two-time All-American, four-time first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference, two-time Academic All-American, two-time Clemson University Athlete of the Year; and

Whereas, in amateur golf Byrd was the South Carolina Golf Association Amateur Golfer of the Year in 1999, two-time member of the United States Palmer Cup Team, Carolinas Golf Association Champion, Carolinas Player of the Year, in 1999 won the prestigious Northeast Amateur Tournament in New York, and was the first Clemson University student and only the second South Carolinian to be named a member of the United States Golf Association Walker Cup Team; and

Whereas, in 2001 Byrd turned professional and participated in the BUY.COM Tour. In only his third event, he won the 2001 BMW

Upstate Classic. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina hereby applaud South Carolina native Jonathan Byrd on his selection as the 2002 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year and wish him continued successes on the links and in life.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Jonathan Byrd.
