A BILL

AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-23-15 SO AS TO REQUIRE THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO HAVE PREPARED BY ARCHITECTS EXPERIENCED IN SCHOOL BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTION A SERIES OF FIVE MODEL SCHOOL BUILDING PLANS FOR ELEMENTARY, FOR MIDDLE, AND FOR HIGH SCHOOLS, TO PROVIDE THAT THESE PLANS MUST BE MADE AVAILABLE TO ALL SCHOOL DISTRICTS FOR THEIR USE WHEN UNDERTAKING NEW SCHOOL BUILDING CONSTRUCTION, AND TO REQUIRE THAT UNLESS A WAIVER IS GRANTED A DISTRICT MUST USE ONE OF THESE FIVE PLANS WHEN UNDERTAKING NEW SCHOOL BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    The 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 59-23-15.    The Department of Education shall cause to have prepared by architects experienced in school building and construction a series of five different model school building plans for elementary, for middle, and for high schools. These plans must be made available to the school districts of this State for their use when undertaking new school building construction and a district must use one of these five building plans unless the State Board of Education for good cause shown grants a waiver of this requirement. New school building construction for purposes of this section does not include renovations or additions to existing facilities."

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
