A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE W. WYMAN KING ACADEMY "LADY KNIGHTS" BASKETBALL TEAM OF LEXINGTON COUNTY AND TO HEAD COACH JOEY LONG ON CAPTURING THE SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION 2003 CLASS A GIRLS' STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, participation in high school sports affords young people an opportunity to become great athletes while learning the importance of dedication, perseverance, and teamwork; and

Whereas, playing the sport of basketball, in particular, necessitates the development of not only rigorous physical abilities but also superior communication skills; and

Whereas, to become champions in the sport, single members must relinquish thoughts of individualism and recognize the need for cooperation among all players in order to become a team of people with one common goal; and

Whereas, the "Lady Knights" Basketball Team of W. Wyman King Academy in Batesburg reached their season goals with the outstanding leadership of Coach Joey Long. The team included Kerianne Blease, Nikki Bodie, Lindsey Hollis, Kori Liner, Brittany Mappus, Brittany Matthews, Leah Mills, and Candi Rodgers; and

Whereas, these talented young women began the season with positive attitudes and high hopes, allowing them to exude a competitive spirit, play the game with great force, and defeat almost every opponent; and

Whereas, at the conclusion of the season, the "Lady Knights" overcame Jefferson Davis Academy to finish with a 24-6 overall record and to win the 2003 South Carolina Independent School Association Class A State Basketball Championship; and

Whereas, during the championship series, Kerianne Blease and Brittany Matthews were honored for their individual athleticism and named to the 2003 SCISA Class A All Tournament Team; and

Whereas, these fine young athletes have brought great pride and recognition not only upon W. Wyman King Academy and its loyal and enthusiastic students and supporters, but also to Principal W. Keith Gibson, Lexington County, and the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extend their congratulations to the W. Wyman King Academy "Lady Knights" Basketball Team of Lexington County and Head Coach Joey Long on capturing the South Carolina Independent School Association Class A Girls' State Basketball Championship Title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Coach Joey Long and to the members of the "Lady Knights" Basketball Team of W. Wyman King Academy of Batesburg, South Carolina.
