TO CONGRATULATE MRS. LIZ SMITH-COX OF CENTRAL ON RECEIVING THE ELIZABETH O'NEILL VERNER GOVERNOR'S AWARD FOR THE ARTS FOR INDIVIDUAL IN ARTS EDUCATION BY THE SOUTH CAROLINA ARTS COMMISSION, TO COMMEND HER FOR HER HARD WORK AND DEDICATION, AND TO WISH HER MUCH SUCCESS IN ALL OF HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, the Governor's Awards for the Arts, the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Awards are the highest honor the State gives in the arts. The Verner Awards are presented annually to South Carolina organizations, businesses, and individuals participating in the growth and advancement of the arts in South Carolina; and
Whereas, a committee appointed by the South Carolina Arts Commission Board of Commissioners reviews all nominations and makes recommendations to the board for final approval. The awards are presented by the Governor during a ceremony each spring; and
Whereas, Mrs. Liz Smith-Cox is the 2003 recipient of the Verner Award for Individual in Arts Education. Mrs. Smith-Cox began teaching in 1947 in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was an art teacher at D. W. Daniel High School from 1970 to 1988 where she received the Pickens County Teacher of the Year Award and the South Carolina Teacher of the Year Award in 1976; and
Whereas, the Daniel High School yearbook was dedicated to her twice and she was also the South Carolina Art Educator of the Year in 1979 while she taught at D. W. Daniel High School; and
Whereas, Mrs. Smith-Cox is a member of several organizations including the South Carolina Art Education Association, the National Art Education Association, the South Carolina Education Association, and the National Education Association; and
Whereas, in addition to her work as a teacher, the artwork of Mrs. Smith-Cox has been placed on exhibit throughout North and South Carolina; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are proud to honor Liz Smith-Cox as the 2003 recipient of the Verner Award for Individual in Arts Education and for her many contributions to Art Education in South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Liz Smith-Cox of Central on receiving the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Award for the Arts for Individual in Arts Education by the South Carolina Arts Commission, commend her for her hard work and dedication, and wish her much success in all of her future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Liz Smith-Cox of Central.
