A HOUSE RESOLUTION

APPLAUDING THE 2002-2003 CLEMSON UNIVERSITY GOLF TEAM AND HEAD COACH LARRY PENLEY ON THEIR FIRST-EVER NATIONAL COLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION NATIONAL GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP AND RECOGNIZING THE DETERMINATION AND SKILL THAT CATAPULTED THEM TO THE TOP OF ALL THE MAJOR COLLEGIATE GOLF POLLS.

Whereas, the 2002-2003 Clemson University Tiger Golf Team garnered the school's first-ever NCAA National Championship in golf; and

Whereas, the top finish is only the fourth National Championship for the University in any sport; and

Whereas, the Tigers also made their mark as the only team in NCAA history to win the conference, regional, and national titles in the same year; and

Whereas, Head Coach Larry Penley took National Coach of the Year honors from the Golf Coach's Association as he guided the Topy Cup, Carpet Classic, and Jerry Pate Champions to the national title; and

Whereas, senior first-team All-American D.J. Trahan paved the way for his talented and highly touted teammates -- Jack Ferguson, Matt Hendrix, Gregg Jones, and Ben Duncan -- to capture the crown, and finished the collegiate season himself with a second-place slot in the final Golfweek/Sagarin computer rankings; and

Whereas, the Tiger Team added to its 2002-2003 season honors with Number One rankings in the final Golfweek/Sagarin, Golf World, and Golf Coach's Association polls. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, applaud the 2002-2003 Clemson University Golf Team and Head Coach Larry Penley on their first-ever National Collegiate Athletic Association National Golf Championship and recognize the determination and skill that catapulted them to the top of all the major collegiate golf polls.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Head Coach Larry Penley on behalf of the 2002-2003 Clemson University Golf Team.
