A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE MUNGO COMPANY ON ITS FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF PROVIDING QUALITY HOUSING TO THOUSANDS OF SOUTH CAROLINA FAMILIES, TO COMMEND MICHAEL J. MUNGO FOR HIS EXTRAORDINARY VISION, COMMITMENT, AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS AND STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO WISH THE MUNGO COMPANY CONTINUED SUCCESS IN ALL ITS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Since 1954 the Mungo Family has been building homes from the most affordable to the most luxurious for thousands of families in the Midlands; and

Whereas, the Mungo Company was the vision of Michael J. Mungo, which started as a small residential construction company committed to providing quality housing at affordable prices. It has grown from a staff of only a few to a current staff of one hundred eighteen; and

Whereas, Michael Mungo, a sheetrock installer who worked his way through several academic degrees at the University of South Carolina, pioneered land development as a viable profession, launching his own company in 1954; and

Whereas, among his first developments was Whitehall in the St. Andrews area of Columbia, which was the first neighborhood outside of the city to have water and sewer, rolled concrete curbs and gutters, and uniform street lighting, among the first of his innovations that set the standard for building in the Midlands; and

Whereas, the Mungo Company developed homes in Spring Valley, Wexford, Friarsgate, and Sheffield, as well as Ascot, an equestrian community which was selected as "Community of the Year" by the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia's 1996 Regal Awards Committee; and

Whereas, Audubon Oaks, a sixty-two acre Irmo subdivision, was the first neighborhood in the United States to be certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a Backyard Habitat. One-third of the land is set aside for natural areas and nature trails, and each home is landscaped with native plants and built with special environmental features; and

Whereas, in the late 1970's after becoming the largest residential developer in South Carolina and one of the nation's leading home building corporations, Michael Mungo retired from the company and the baton was passed. For more than twenty-five years Steven and Stewart Mungo, sons of Michael Mungo, have continued producing thousands of quality homes and have led the company through significant growth and expansion, including a recent expansion to Charleston with the development of a sister company, Harbor Homes of Charleston; and

Whereas, not only did Michael Mungo followed his dream and fulfill his promise to thousands of families in the Midlands, but he and his sons have created a company of national prominence and a legacy of leadership and community service that is known throughout the State; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize the illustrious career of Mr. Michael J. Mungo and the celebrated Mungo Company. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate the Mungo Company on its fiftieth Anniversary of providing quality housing to thousands of South Carolina families, commend Michael J. Mungo for his extraordinary vision, commitment, and dedicated service to the citizens and State of South Carolina, and wish the Mungo Company continued success in all its future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Michael J. Mungo.
