A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE AND COMMEND MISS SHALINI BUMB OF GREER UPON BEING NAMED ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S TOP TWO YOUTH VOLUNTEERS FOR 2004 BY THE PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS, TO RECOGNIZE HER FOR AN OUTSTANDING RECORD OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE, PEER LEADERSHIP, AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT, AND TO EXTEND TO HER BEST WISHES IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Shalini Bumb of Greenville County, a senior at Greenville High School, has achieved national recognition for exemplary volunteer service by being named one of South Carolina's top two youth volunteers for 2004 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that we recognize South Carolinians who are dedicated to giving their time and energy to helping build a sense of togetherness and volunteering in their communities; and

Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the achievements of those who strive for the betterment of not only the great State of South Carolina but also the world; and

Whereas, this prestigious award, presented by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, honors young volunteers across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving their communities; and

Whereas, Miss Bumb earned this award by giving generously of her time, talents, and energy to drawing attention to the prevalence of landmines around the world and raising money for the removal of buried bombs in Cambodia; and

Whereas, after founding the "Project Landmines" club with five other teens at her high school, the club designed an informational pamphlet about landmines to send out to area businesses and made a display board to use in presentations at school and community events; and

Whereas, in addition to "Project Landmines", Miss Bumb was instrumental in circulating a petition in favor of an international landmines treaty and the organization of a Christmas caroling fundraiser that raised hundreds of dollars to help "demine" a field in Cambodia and to assist mine victims; and

Whereas, the success of the State of South Carolina, the strength of our communities, and the overall vitality of American society depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of young people like Shalini Bumb who use their considerable talents and resources to serve others. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate and commend Miss Shalini Bumb of Greer upon being named one of South Carolina's top two youth volunteers for 2004 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards to recognize her for an outstanding record of volunteer service, peer leadership, and community spirit and extend to her best wishes in all of her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Miss Shalini Bumb of Greer.
