A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND NANCY RISER ODOM OF SPARTANBURG FOR HER TIRELESS EFFORTS TO BRIGHTEN SPARTANBURG COUNTY, THE STATE, AND THE LIVES OF OTHERS THROUGH GARDENING.

Whereas, Nancy Riser Odom has been actively involved in gardening in Spartanburg and throughout the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, as the State Wildflower chairman of the Garden Club of South Carolina, Ms. Odom was the inspiration behind the 2003 bill naming Goldenrod as the state wildflower, and with her diligent and determined efforts, she rallied support of the bill from garden clubs, civic clubs, and churches around the State; and

Whereas, Ms. Odom is also the State Birds and Backyard Wildlife Habitat chairman of the Garden Club of South Carolina where she has helped raise money to plant a children's garden at the Spartanburg Children's Shelter; and

Whereas, as a member and past president of the Spartanburg Garden Club, Nancy Odom is currently the Veterans Blue Star chairman for which she recently wrote and received a grant for the planting of Goldenrod, the state wildflower, and other native plants around the Blue Star Marker in Spartanburg County, and the Red Ribbon chairman for which she hosted Red Ribbon Day at Hatcher Horticultural Gardens to teach children about drug prevention; and

Whereas, during her two terms as president of the Hillbrook Merry Tillers, Nancy Odom was involved in programs at a Marantha Nursing Home and the Spartanburg Rescue Mission; and

Whereas, Ms. Odom is a member of the South Carolina Native Plant Society, the In-depth Garden Club, the National Wildlife Federation, the Nature Conservancy, the Joshua Hawkins Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and St. Pauls Methodist Church where she is a member of the Altar Guild and a Sunday school teacher; she is also a Master Gardener and Master Flower Show judge and helped start the Greater Carolinas Hosta Society; and

Whereas, numerous organizations have recognized her outstanding service. She was named Woman of the Year by the Spartanburg Garden Club Council and the East Piedmont District of the Garden Club of South Carolina; she received the Outstanding Service Award for the East Piedmont District; and she received the National Daughters of the American Revolution Conservation Award; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the members of the General Assembly extol the hard work and leadership of Nancy Riser Odom in making Goldenrod the state wildflower and for making the State a more beautiful place through horticulture. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and commend Nancy Riser Odom of Spartanburg for her tireless efforts to brighten Spartanburg County, the State, and the lives of others through gardening.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Nancy Riser Odom of Spartanburg.
