A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE GREAT FALLS "RED DEVILS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH JOHN SMITH FOR WINNING THE 2004 STATE CLASS A BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to learn that the Great Falls "Red Devils" Boys Basketball Team defeated the Hemingway Tigers 60-58 to win the 2004 Class A Basketball Championship at the Colonial Center in Columbia; and

Whereas, Hemingway had an outstanding team comprised mainly of seniors with several extremely tall players and for Great Falls to win the title game took great poise, concentration, a patient offense, and a full-court pressing defense; and

Whereas, one example of the courageous play of the Red Devils is that of James Culp. He hurt his ankle in the second half but still scored eleven fourth-quarter points and a total of thirteen in the second half. Without his effort and the great efforts of other players, the Red Devils would surely have lost; and

Whereas, under the able leadership of Coach John Smith, one of the best prep coaches in the State regardless of classification who recorded his seven hundredth career victory in the championship game, the Great Falls boys have become a leader in Class A, having played for the state title in eleven of the past twelve years with Coach Smith having won six state titles; and

Whereas, the accomplishments on and off the court during the basketball season by this wonderful group of athletes have brought deserved credit and recognition not only upon themselves and their school, but upon their community as well as helping to make Chester County the basketball capital of the State; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and commend the Great Falls Red Devils and their coaching staff upon the occasion of their winning this truly deserved championship. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly hereby congratulates the Great Falls "Red Devils" Boys Basketball Team and Coach John Smith for winning the 2004 State Class A Basketball Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Coach John Smith.
