A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE AND COMMEND MISS SHALINI BUMB OF GREER UPON RECEIVING THE PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD, TO RECOGNIZE HER FOR AN OUTSTANDING RECORD OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE, PEER LEADERSHIP, AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT, TO COMMEND HER ON HER ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS, AND TO EXTEND TO HER BEST WISHES IN ALL HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Shalini Bumb of Greer, a senior at Southside High School's Center for International Studies, has achieved national recognition for exemplary volunteer service by being named one of South Carolina's top two youth volunteers for 2004 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that we recognize students who excel in academics, leadership, community service, and extracurricular endeavors; and

Whereas, academically, Miss Bumb ranks number one in her class of one hundred sixty-five, has a combined SAT score of 1470, has excelled in SAT competitions and Lincoln-Douglas debates, which earned her a national degree of distinction; and

Whereas, adeptly juggling her challenging academic schedule, she currently holds a number of leadership roles as treasurer for Model UN, vice president of the Student Government Association, president of the Interact Club, president of Mu Alpha Math Club, president of the Tiger Ambassadors, and co-captain of the Speech and Debate Team; and

Whereas, Ms. Bumb's varied leadership skills earned her the Kodak Youth Leadership Award; and

Whereas, Miss Bumb earned the Prudential Spirit of Community Award by giving generously of her time, talents, and energy to drawing attention to the prevalence of landmines around the world and raising money for the removal of buried bombs in Cambodia; and

Whereas, this prestigious award, presented by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, honors young volunteers across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving their communities; and

Whereas, she founded the "Project Landmines" club with five other teens and she was instrumental in circulating a petition in favor of an international landmines treaty and in the organization of a Christmas caroling fundraiser that raised hundreds of dollars to help "demine" a field in Cambodia and to assist mine victims; and

Whereas, her concern for her fellow citizens has led her to perform over two hundred hours of community service including volunteering with the local hospital system, peer and elementary tutoring, the adopt-a-highway program, the soup kitchen, the Red Cross, and fundraisers for sick children in addition to helping establish a chapter of Habitat for Humanity in her community; and

Whereas, in the midst of her busy academic and community service schedules, Miss Bumb finds time for sports like soccer, is a tennis standout, and a brown belt in karate; and

Whereas, Miss Bumb has been accepted at fifteen highly selective universities where she plans to major in biomedical engineering and plans to go on to medical school and continue her service to the community and State through the medical field; and

Whereas, the success of the State of South Carolina, the strength of our communities, and the overall vitality of American society depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of young people like Shalini Bumb who use their considerable talents and resources to serve others; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the South Carolina General Assembly pauses to recognize this truly gifted and talented young woman's accomplishments. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate and commend Miss Shalini Bumb of Greer upon receiving the Prudential Spirit of Community Award, to recognize her for an outstanding record of volunteer service, peer leadership, and community spirit, to commend her on her academic achievements, and to extend to her best wishes in all her future endeavors.
