TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-67-485 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT A SCHOOL BUS TRANSPORTING CERTAIN STUDENTS MUST HAVE A SCHOOL BUS MONITOR ON BOARD AND TO PROVIDE THAT A SCHOOL BUS MONITOR MUST BE A LICENSED DRIVER AND BE PAID AT LEAST MINIMUM WAGE.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Article 3, Chapter 67, Title 59 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 59-67-485. (A) Notwithstanding another provision of law, a school bus, while transporting students in grades K-6, in addition to the driver, must have an adult passenger who serves as a school bus monitor on board. The school bus monitor is responsible for maintaining accountability of all student passengers and enforcing proper school bus etiquette.
(B) A school bus monitor must have a valid South Carolina driver's license and earn not less than the minimum wage."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
