A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE AND EXTEND VERY BEST WISHES TO CHARLOTTE ELIZABETH MONTAGUE PARTRIDGE OF ALLENDALE COUNTY AS SHE CELEBRATES HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY ON JANUARY 16, 2006, AND TO WISH HER MANY MORE HAPPY BIRTHDAYS TO COME.

Whereas, Charlotte Elizabeth Montague Partridge was born on January 16, 1906, in old Barnwell County before Allendale County was established; and

Whereas, she has dedicated her life to her family and her faith and serves as a shining example of what it means to be a true South Carolinian; and

Whereas, everything that she has accomplished during her rich lifetime has been due to her hard work, dedication, and the tenacity of her spirit; and

Whereas, having lost her mother at the young age of eleven, Ms. Partridge was raised by her grandparents and though she always had a great thirst for learning, she was not able to further her education after attending the Old Church School in the St. Mark Baptist Church area. As a result of her love of learning and of her devotion to her faith, she loves to read books and the Bible in particular; and

Whereas, she married Joseph A. Partridge, a logger from Apex, North Carolina, and returned with him there but later moved to Philadelphia where she was a member of Second Pilgrim Baptist Church and began working in a manufactory making nurses' uniforms while Joseph began working in the steel mills; and

Whereas, together the couple had two children while living in Philadelphia: Alfred and Arminta; and

Whereas, life was stressful during the Depression era, and knowing they needed to plan for the children's education and future, she completed beauty school in 1937 and set up her own business at home. Ms. Partridge always put the needs of her children first and dreamed of a better life back home in Allendale and during the World War II era, she and the children returned home. Her husband Joseph would later follow but was unable to stay and returned to work in the steel mills of Philadelphia; and

Whereas, Ms. Partridge was not only a beautician but also a farmer, a domestic, and a seamstress as well. Her brother, Wesley Montague, lived in Allendale and helped her begin the business of farming; and

Whereas, realizing her dream of providing a real and permanent home for her family, in 1945 she and her children moved into the house she proudly still calls home to this day; and

Whereas, the family returned to the home church, St. Mark Baptist Church, for a time but later joined and became active in Mt. Tabor Baptist Church as it was closer to town, and it was so important to her that her children would have easy access to worship and church participation; and

Whereas, in 1951, her love of children led her to adopt her beloved Benjamin who is still devoted to his dear mother; and

Whereas, Ms. Partridge attributes her longevity to plenty of hard work and the "help of the Lord"; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina pause to extend good wishes on the occasion of her historic one hundredth birthday to this dear South Carolinian and wonderful and humble servant of the Lord. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate congratulate and extend their very best wishes to Charlotte Elizabeth Montague Partridge of Allendale County as she celebrates her one hundredth birthday on January 16, 2006, and wish her many more happy birthdays to come.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ms. Charlotte Elizabeth Montague Partridge.
